When I put in a CD, connect an external hd, flash hd, and thumb drive, all that shows up is C:\ and a floppy disk drive.
There isn't even a floppy drive ON the computer.
But it's always been there.

Rather then go through all of that nonsense, why not simply get an external disk drive, the kind that are used with tablets and macbook airs all the time?

Read his 3rd post, dumb ass...

My mom has a tablet that has no cd drive, when she plugs in the external drive, it shows up as the cd drive, not a flash drive. This is what showed up when I plugged it in:

Do you have a brain deficiency or are you just mentally fuckin retarded?!
OP said he has a old laptop and it does not support USB boot.
If it does then a external USB CD drive will solve his problems.

Yeah and I bet if you attach a USB prong to your cock and plug it in, the computer will detect it as a cock not a USB flash drive!

OP:
The floppy is due to probably the bios have it enabled, set it to disabled so the system will not display a floppy drive icon.

A usb boot is NOT the same thing as a boot from an external CD drive, even if it's plugged into usb port!

This is what that OP posted, and cryoma said he could not do. Do you see anything in there that says anything about external CD drives? No.

Did cryoma try to boot from a disk from an external cd drive? No.

I think Phox is right, a external cd-drive to boot from is not the same as a flash-drive to boot from

I've got a pretty old laptop that I think would run nicely with a fresh install of xp, problem is the CD drive is broken, and when I set boot priority there's no option for flash drives, so that's out of the question also.
I basically need a way to install xp with only the primary hd.
After looking around I found grub, but the website doesn't even tell you what it is, let alone how to use it.
Any help on how I can pull this off?

For old laptop HDD connecting to a desktop, you'll need a adapter

You realize that that doesn't actually work in real life, don't you?

Actually it does, I have used it since Windows SP2 came out, used to install Windows 7, and XP.

It called boot options and select the network adapter as the primary one.

for *some* motherboards, you can simply copy all files in your winxp cd to an empty partition in your primary hard drive, and that partition will automatically become bootable.

cost: $0. worth a try!

Daemon Tools Lite.

Not sure if you can do it with XP, but my Windows 7 install without actually using a CD went fantastically.
