if you knew how xp mode worked then you'd know that wouldn't help cut down on memory usage

Just don't run so many programs at once, have open only what you need to have open, pretty much common sense. This is all stuff you already know, did you really have to post this question?

It uses that much RAM for a reason. It helps the programs operate faster. You don't want it to cut down. And when you do want it to cut down because you want to run another heavy-use program, Windows will automatically do that for you. Don't worry about it.

That pretty much it. Don't touch it. You're not a hero. Let it do it's own thing.
Oh don't leave it on for a long period of time (7-8hours) i notice my Win7 starts to get laggy then.

what, the W7 box upstairs has never been shut off once
it's been running since i built it months ago, just goes to sleep at night, back and ready in 2 seconds in the morning. the only time it's been shut off is fucking power surges
you're doing something wrong if you have problems with it getting laggy every couple hours

how do you turn off the aero features? and i leave my PC on for days, it doesnt really lag but still. like im saying on my XP computer i run the same amount of stuff and it the memory usage never went above like 700 or 900MB, but i noticed like on vista and 7 the memory usage gets above 1GB by itself very quickly. i dont have an antivirus programs (except windows secruity essentials) and AIM is the only program usually running in the background along with utorrent. but you know like still...

You didn't read everything, did you? It has been said already that Vista/7 use RAM differently than XP and below. V/7 use as much RAM as it wants to speed up processes, then frees some up when other processes want more RAM, instead of XP using just the required amount for it. (I think I got that right (bad wording?) someone correct me if I didn't.)

w7 idles on 400 - 600mb ram depending on what services are running. The lowest I could get w7 on my netbook to idle was around 450. Its better on ram than vista, but it still uses. Also, it wont just let your ram sit untouched. It will use as much as it can. Its better to have your ram being used than sitting untouched.

It uses a lot of RAM for a reason. RAM doesn't do you any good sitting idle, that's why Win7/Vista uses the RAM (that otherwise wouldn't be in use) to speed up processes.

Protip: Aero is faster than the "basic" theme. Basic does not make use of hardware acceleration.
