|
|
I have this old laptop, and i want to install Ubuntu.
The problem is the hard disk is completely empty after i deleted the files using a separate computer.
So the system doesn't recognise it as a native drive, i would think.
There is no problem with the ubuntu disk because i've already installed it on 2 computers.
Anybody know a fix?
Edit: just formatted it. Now it says:
NTDLR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
Any ideas?

Make sure you didn't toss away the MBR when you formatted.

i'vwe checked the bios already, but i think it just skipped the cd drive out completely.
When i formatted the drive, i formatted it as NTFS.
And what's an MBR?

How did you format it?
The Ubuntu CD should have an option to format whichever drive you want to install in, but in your case I'd say your HDD is more or less screwed.
Boot from a GParted liveCD and format your drive again.

Just format the disk to RAW, fuckin wipe it. It should be fairly obvious that the BIOS is trying to boot from the HDD rather than the Ubuntu CD, so fix it.
EDIT: Shit, then/than typo. I hate the misuse of then and than.

His drive isn't screwed, his PC just isn't booting from the disc drive. Check your BIOS to make sure that first boot priority is the disc drive and not your harddrive.
If you've checked that already, then join the club. My PC refuses to boot from external / CD drive.

I was only pointing out that it's silly to format it to NTFS if it's just going to get formatted to ext2/ext4 when Ubuntu is installed. Regardless, that does seem to be a feature of old motherboards (semi-related note, installing Windows 7, which is DVD only, onto an old craptop with only a CD drive and no ability to boot from a USB device is a nightmare), though I haven't seen any mention of an external drive in the thread.

i'm now running out of options, more or less.
The bios was the first thing i checked.
Anyways, like i said before, what's happening is that the CD drive isn't even getting checked even with the boot cd in it.
And i've just deleted any partitions on the drive, so it's pretty much factory clean.
@above: i can link up the laptop drive to my desktop pc using an external HD case.
