Gonna do it via an OEM rip but I can't burn DVDs. So could I put this on a portable HDD and install it from there?

Yes, thank you. Now do you know if I can continue using the portable harddrive like normal? Or would I have to go through and reverse everything?

You could format it, boot win7 from it
Install win7 then you can format the usb again and use it as normal

Also you cna only direct upgrade to windows 7 from vista

so if you have xp you will need to format your HD

Don't worry about it, when you install windows 7 it will give you an option to format the hard drive.
