I have an ATI Radeon X800 XT and a nVidia Geforce 6800. Both are PCI-Express.

No.
You can have 2 ATI Cards in Crossfire.
You can have 2 NVIDIA Cards in SLI.
But you can't make a mix.
Also those cards are to old for crossfire/sli.
Also I doubt your 300W PSU can run both.

And the ATI card thats you buy have to be CrossfireX ready.

The nVidia cards also have to be SLI ready.

Some of them aren't.

If your not running in SLI or CrossFire, then you can mixed cards, but it's not recommended as installing the drivers will be a bitch.

Adding 2 graphic card not for gaming purposes is if your going to hook up more than 2 monitors. If you just got one monitor then there is not point on getting a 2nd video card.

Can you do split screens that way? Like 1 big screen made up of 2 monitors?

Actually, Lucid's Hydra 200 chip apparently allows connectivity of cross-vendor cards, though it's probably not going to be released for retail until another fortnight or so, and when it is it will probably cost over $300. Shy of that, there's no way to use both simultaneously.

Yes and the more monitors you have the bigger your screen gets or the more it stretches.

Or, you can have a 8600gt + as a PhyX card and a ATI card as the main one
doesn't work on the new NVidia drivers
