I tried that before, didn't work; all I did was think about the salt and my tongue and it dries out your mouth.

Did you drink a lot of water beforehand? You have to do so before putting salt on your tongue, and it takes effect in about 40 minutes.

Turn lights OFF! Melatonin is the chemical your brain secretes to make you sleep. Melatonin is released faster if there are no lights around.

Agreed, but earlier in the day when you wake up because studies have shown that if you exercise, you will be more awake for two hours. Then, you'll start to want to sleep.

Depends on what you do, during class a red bull is enough for me to stay alive & awake from 11am to 3pm and by the time your home the caffeine have worn off and you'll crash.
