Ok so i got my new i7 build a while ago, and i overclocked my hardware. My i7 920 maxed out with all the cores reaching 72, but in everest the overall CPU reading was only at 65.

I was just wondering what thermal reading i go by, and what is the max safe temps for an i7-920?

Thanks.

OP: The i7 can get to pretty high temperatures safely. I'm not sure what the correct tjunction for the 920 is (somebody else here probably does), but that would be why different programs are giving you different results for temperature. Basically, if those are your temps under 100% load, you don't have anything to worry about.

tjunction is 100c on the I7, aka where it will start to throttle. not really recommended, but it'll survive 100c~ temps.

i'd start worrying when you're passing the high 80's mark which is somewhat typical for gigantic overclocks.

Hot? Cold?
Are they accurate? Are they false?

What do you think?

I just explained it 1 post above yours, but if you want more info...

The temps aren't guaranteed to be accurate as you can't read the temperature directly. You get the distance to tjunction and subtract.

If the tjunction is 100c on your chip and coretemp says you're at 40c, then that means the distance is 60c. The lower the temperature, the less accurate the reading. The hotter the chip is, the more correct it's likely to be. More than likely it will be more than accurate enough, as I doubt it would ever be off by more than a minuscule amount.

If you hit tjunction, the chip is going to try and throttle. If it gets hotter yet, you'll trigger thermal shutdown.

Your temps look fine enough

At 100C, the computer turns off automatically.

For my computer, the temperature range is about 40C - 45C.

The higher it is, the most likely it will crash.

it doesn't shut off at tjunction, it tries to throttle.

It'll only shut off if you set it to in the BIOS.
