im getting a new laptop, but im still deciding between these 2 laptops, is over 5 hours of battery life alot? also one has 3 GB DDR3 but only 1.3 GHz, and a 250 GB HD, but the other one is 2.1GHz 2 GB DDR2, and only 160 GB HD (this one haz a bigger screen and im leaning towards getting this)

The 1.3GHz is most likely a LV based cpu and combined with ddr3 you do get extra battery life.

I'll take the cpu from #2 and combine it with the ram from laptop choice #1.

Provided you can. Not many motherboards support both DDR2 and DDR3, and I don't think any of them are laptop motherboards.

Would a bigger screen really matter? You could just use the laptop's screen and hook it up to a regular computer monitor, or even one of the new televisions. I'd definately put RAM and physical memory higher on the priority list than the screen size. Either way, congrats on getting a laptop.

RAM is physical memory. More than 2GB usually won't be used unless you do some gaming or professional computer applications. A 1.3GHz ULV will have difficulty running modern-day operating systems. What are the exact specifications of each laptop? And do you even need a laptop in the first place?

its so i can carry it around when i go places, and to school easier for me to take notes

If you're planning to take it around and go to school with it, any screen larger than 14" is too big.
