It's a Wolfdale core based on the higher-end Core 2 Duos, and of course, Core 2 Duos do a good job against the Athlon II X2, even if the L2 cache is slashed. Both offering are good enough though.
The Asus 9600GSO is still a sweet deal at about $7 more. For hard drive, IMO, a 7200RPM drive is just about $5 more. But a 5400RPM drive will suffice anyways. Save on RAM: Corsair XMS2 4GB. It might be worth looking at G4x series, or the ATX P4x series if you have the space.

@anden: Well, when you only have a need for watching movies and listening to stuff, the price drops like a rock. You don't need an expensive GPU (that can be over $100 off), you can do well with pretty much any dual-core processor (about $50 off), your PSU doesn't have to put out much wattage (over $50 off), and simply not caring about case design can be up to $50 off.
That is $200-250 off right there, that's where you get your figures. |
It's not about who has posted the better specs or what not, it's up to the OP to decide what parts he wants out of the 2 list.
Also the GPU will be doing the major role when it comes to playing HD content. | Yes the GPU will be doing most of the work with videos, that is obvious. Hence the name 'video' card. However, that doesn't mean he should go with bad processor. The processor I posted is only $8 more, and, again, is much better.

@kls: Yeah, 2GB (2x1GB) kits are high, almost as high as the 2x2GB kits. I suppose more people are moving to DDR3 with all the new Core i5 and Core i7 processors.
The video card generally does not do any video decoding, it only displays the bit streams that the CPU decodes. It's all about the CPU. That is, unless you have some GPU-accelerated decoder (PowerDVD, CoreAVC, etc.).

Yeah, I think there was something about that in Maximum PC, though that magazine gets me pissed off sometimes.

Don't be stupid. The CPU kls posted is exactly equivalent to a 2.4GHz 45nm C2D, just with a bit less L2 cache.

I got the Asus 9600 GSO for 40 bucks last week and installed it yesterday. Works like a charm and I hear it has great overclocking potential.

Yeah, you can easily hit 725 on the core and 2000 (Samsung 0.8ns chips were used in my 8800GS IIRC) on the RAM without a voltage mod. Amazing deal.

Will it overheat if I OC it to 725?
I'm not planning to put in additional cooling systems so it'll depend on the fan on the card itself.

I wouldn't overclock a video card all at once. You'll want to go in increments.

To check for temperature issues, artifacts, etc.
It's not like it's a hassle or anything.

Oh ok.
Maybe I'll try that out later on. I'm still busting through the older games that I have that I couldn't play before due to my crappy integrated card from before.
