The codec pack is "safe", and yes: you have to download and install it.
Alternatively, you could try VLC player (if you only need a media player, not external codecs).
Homepage for CCCP is cccp-project.net, I think.

CCCP contains just about every video codec you'll ever, ever need.
It's perfectly safe.

Its got 1 con for us animefags. It wont show subtitles on MPC. I had to switch it with kiite to fix that.

I'm not familiar with MPC (using WMP here), but assuming it loads up the DirectVobSub DShow filter, then you can easily manipulate how soft-subs show up in your player.

That's a problem with Windows 7 iirc. Works fine on Vista/XP.
