I'm having trouble setting my computer so it can go to sleep.
These are my current settings, just so I can test it:
It works, as long as I just leave it standing there with nothing open. The problem is I like to listen to music before I go to sleep, it helps me sleep. So with Windows Media Player open and playing music, my computer won't go to sleep. It won't even turn off the monitor.
Does anyone know how I can fix this?

You can write a quick batch file (shutdown -s, for example, to completely shut down your system) and then have Windows Task Scheduler run it at some point in time.
Edit: After looking it up, you can run the PowrProf DLL from rundll32, which allows you to control the power state of your system. Create a new shortcut to rundll32.exe and append, with a space, "powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0" to sleep. Then have task scheduler run it.
The target line should mimic: %WinDir%/system32/rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0

I've had this same fucking problem on both Vista + W7.
Shit works only when it feels like as far as I can tell. It managed to sleep itself yesterday, first time I've seen it do it in weeks. Never figured it out.

Actually, that happens to me too. Sometimes it sleeps, sometimes it doesn't.
Yeah, I know about the shutdown shortcut, but meh. I'll probably use some other program, can't seem to find a program with a clean looking gui.

If your system goes to sleep then there is not point to turn off your monitor.
Set your screen to go off in 1 minute and sleep at 2 minutes.
This is so the monitor will go off first and a minute later the system will turn off thus sleep.
For sleep to work properly, you will need to enable ACPI 2.0 within your bios and a reinstall of the OS is sometimes needed.

I Googled it and found the same thing. I already disabled my network adapter to be able to wake my computer.

If I leave my computer without Windows Media Player and the settings I have above, it'll turn off the monitor at exactly 1 minute, 15 - 20 seconds later it'll put the computer to sleep. Sleep does work properly if nothing is open. Sometimes it decides to work, sometimes it doesn't. Awkward situation.

isn't there a option to close media player after it's finished playing ? (not sure, never used mediaplayer)
also, only problem I have with the sleep in windows 7 is that it automatically turns back on after several hours

well it's not supposed to sleep the computer unless you are in idle.. The meaning is to save electricity by sleeping as it takes less electicity than just doing notin'.
You could develop a programe that makes the computer go to sleep after a while.
