4 GPUs! Overall, scaling seems pretty nice up to 3 cards, although that will tear a big hole in your budget. Even with HD5850s in a triple-card configuration, that's somewhere in the $780s. Warhead doesn't seem to like more than 2 HD5870s though, and even then, CF scaling is not as good as in other games such as Far Cry 2, HAWX, and RE5.
2 cards seems to be the sweet spot, although even one will blow through just about everything.

4 cards does perform well if you play it at 2560x1600 (30" monitor).
