Hey guys im thinking about getting a 2tb external drive
i was going to get it to:
backup all my pictures
music
my programs
movies

Now can you guys please answer a few of my questions.
1. Can you stream(or play directly from) movies from the drive to the pc without lag or anything?
2. Does it really matter if its usb or the other type (sata or something)
3. Is it possible to say put a game on it like any game like sims or age of empires and play it on a computer without transferring it?(or any program)
4. Whats the difference between usb and the other type of plugin(sata i think)?
5. Do you think that by Christmas their will be bigger than 2tb?
6. Are there any specific things i should make sure it has or it shouldn't have?
7. Can you guys show me an example of a good one and a not so good one?
8. I could have a whole os on it right?
9. If i had an os on it could i plug it into a computer without an os and use it?
10. Do they need to be connected to a power cord or can they live off of usb?[/list]
11. What do you think about having and external drive in general?

1. Yes, if the drive speed/bottlekneck of transportation (either USB, firewire, eSATA) is faster than you are transfer the data.
2. Yes, rate of data transfer...
3. I have done it with eSATA... Though there may be some drive permission rights that conflict.
4. See your second question/answer.
5. They will always get bigger... The better question is, why do you need so big of a hard drive?
6. It should have a hard drive, external connections, and a case.
7. They all suck pretty bad :\
8. I WOULD NOT RECOMMENDED THIS AT ALL EVER.
9. NO DON'T DO IT
10. Most cannot live off a USB. The 3.5"+ can DEF NOT live off of one.

PS: External hard drives are not for a single way to store files... They are a form of secondary storage.

ie, you would have a copy of your data on the normal hard drive and the external hard drive...

or even...

you would have a copy of your data on the normal hard drive, blu-ray disk, flash-drive and external hard drive.
-------------------

Now, i would not suggest using an external hard drive to store things that are not already backed up in another location! IF you are going to do this, rethink buying an external hard drive.

1. Yes you can stream movie from a ext. HD without lag but... (linked to Q:2)

2. Yes it matters, USB 2.0, 1394 A/B and eSATA have different speeds. Only 1394 A/B and eSATA* have a sustained transfer rate
Haven't check on USB 3.0 or wireless USB
* relate to Q:4

3. I would not recommend doing it.

4. Different types physical connectors and size. SATA are for internal drives and uses a L-shape connector which is different than the connector for eSATA.
eSATA is the best way for hooking up a ext. HD in terms of speed, but there is a downside. eSATA does not have its own power source so no matter what type of ext. drive you have (2.5" or 3.5"), you will need a AC power brick.
Newer eSATA should provide its own power like USB.

Additional AC Power requirement:
2.5" USB ext. HD: No
3.5: USB ext. HD: Yes
2.5 and 3.5" eSATA ext. HD: Yes

5. We as humans are never satisified. Like the thrill for speed and taller skyscrapers, things will always get faster, taller and in terms of storage-larger.
Due to some physical boards limitation and Windows itself, HDs larger than 2TB cannnot act as boot drive and certain OS cannot use the drive as a whole and in some OSes it cannot see a GPT partition disk.

e.g. 2x 1.5TB set in RAID 0 will give you 3TB. Vista does not let you format it as a single 3TB partiton unless you format using the GPT method.
More info. in GPT disk here

6. Yes, besides from the obvious for a ext. HD mentioned by localhost, there is one thing about ext. HD if your using eSATA and that's ACHI.
Unlike ext. HD for USB and 1394 A/B all you need to do is plug it in and your good to go, but for eSATA it does not work that way unless ACHI is enabled in the bios.
If a system does not have ACHI enabled, then plugging a eSATA drive to a computer will not recognize it and the user must physicall turn off their system and reboot back on in order to see the drive. They will also need to physically turn off their computer in order to unplug a eSATA drive as it will damage eSATA port as well as the drive itself if ACHI isn't enabled.

Enabling ACHI will require a windows reinstallation

7. Get from a good brand name and you'll be fine.

8. Not recommended

9. Same as Answer #8.

10. Read answer #4.

11. A good source for backing data, but shouldn't be the only source of backup.
