The fire isn't supposed to be completely realistic, more so cartoony like the blade.

3 days for the model (not 72 hours, just 3 days of on and off work), 20 minutes for the fire.

That's great, I can't believe how awesome it looks compared to the original, all white model (which was awesome in itself)! You rounded the handle nicely, and the fire looks great.

I'm more into cartoon style things (not anime) and abstracts, I've never tried realism in 3D but I might give it a shot

it looks good. try to make the fire a little more realistic. to me it still looks like the blade and hilt are out of proportion.

Flames are going horizontally, as if the tip of the blade were up.

i rly recomend u using google sketch up, its great for this kind of work, than u can export the file to 3ds (and maya i guess).
