i put my cpu on without any of that cream and my comptuer works fine...
i think.

See if there's still some cream in there, you might be fine.
Otherwise yeah, you don't want it flying back out.

if you ended up wiping or touching any of the paste, clean it and reapply it.

Consider the $5 to be insurance against not fucking up your card that probably cost at least $100. Just get it and don't chance it, you'll also have plenty left in the tube for a CPU or something when the time comes.
