|
|
My friend went to school and type his research paper in one of the school's computer labs.
He pulled out the flash drive, went home and plugged it to his home PC.
When the USB flash drive is inserted, it says "drive is not formatted, do you want to format now?"
Here's what I've tried so far...
1. I've check into properties and the drive is now stated as "RAW".
2. Ran chkdsk, but Windows cannot scan RAW drives. Tried to force it and still does not work. And since it seems the drive is busted, I thought might was well format it and use a data recovery software to get his files back so
3. Format under windows and it says "windows is not able to complete the format".
4. Tried HP's format utility and it says the drive is locked.
I've went online to check for solutions and so far there isn't one that is feasible.
Now is there any programs that you guys may think will get the flash drive back in working order?
Your answer are appreciated and +rep for the best/working solution.

maybe it was a fault on his part? Did he just pull out the flash drive or used the "safely remove hardware" way as he should have done.
Also, my friend had the EXACT same problem but she ended up just buying a new one so I can't be much help here.

He just pulled it out, without the safe removal, but he told me that's how he always does it and so far he hasn't enounter this before.
And even if there was a error, all windows does is just ran a chkdsk on the flash drive and the drive will be back in working order.
I've read somewhere that this was a cause of a bug from MS, I'll post the link once I find it.
BTW the flash drive is at least 4 years old.

There's your problem. Flash drives have limited write cycles, and it's a miracle that thing lasted as long as it did. Your friend is going to have to buy a new flash drive, and restore from his backup.

By the way, that "Safely remove hardware" isn't there just to annoy the user.

Sadly majority of computer idiots out there will never notice that icon.
As for the flash drive, I've tried hex editor, and software with "BS" claims, and it all does not work.
Therefore the flash drive is dead.
Speaking of removal media, you can just pull it out without the safe removal, but you'll need to change the drive's properties settings.

you can just disable write caching on the device. then you can yank it out as you please.

Just don't be idiotic enough to yank it while it's writing or accessing data.

I know, but its not the best idea anyways to "yank it out" just like that.

Is not the best idea to yank it out when your writing/reading data as ~Freelancer~ has mentioned, but if you set the drive to "optimize for quick removal" then windows will allow you to just yank out the drive without the need to use the safe removal icon.
