Can I simply use a double sided USB and connect the two? Will hte laptop simply show up as a new harddisk? Or is it way more complicated than I expected?

No, that won't work without proprietary software.

Your best bet is to setup a network link with FireWire or GbE, and just setup network sharing temporarily.

Easiest and cheapest solution would just be a flash drive, but that could be tedious transferring music like 4GB at a time.

You can find a crossover CAT5 (or CAT6) cable, set up a share, and access it from one of the computers. That's actually very fast if you've got decent quality network cards.

I got even easier solution since i've been wondering how to do equal thing not long ago. Just transfer the files using random messenger that supports file transfer (i.e. almost all decent). Skype is the best one, since its not using protocol, but P2P technology, thus enabling higher speed. I achieved something like 24mb/s transfer (in the beginning was even more, but at the end the HDD was nearly full Razz) from my laptop on my desktop (connected to the same router and being next to each other). Poor old laptop lagged way too hard Laughing

You cannot just use a regular double sided USB cables and plug it to both computers as you not only will you fried the cable, but damage both computers as well.

There are USB cables for these purposes and they're called USB transfer cables.
There's one called the USB Tornado transfer kit.

you can just take your LAN cable and plug each end into each computer. then make one of them 'discoverable' and you can start transferring straight like that

well if you're under LAN, use AIM. It actually works quite well. I would transfer movies in literally 30 seconds. (700 mb)
