Well, in your previous Graphics Card did you use a HDMI/S-Video Cable?
If so, Audio may have been transferred using the GPU using the Internal SPDIF connection between the motherboard and GPU...

I had a similiar problem a long time ago, before I really knew what was in my computer. I have a separate sound card, instead of it being integrated to my motherboard. Quite redundant, for my computer at least. I once unplugged it and when I plugged it back in, I plugged it into my motherboard, and not the sound card. If you have a sound card, the sound is going straight to the sound card. Try seeing if you have another jack in the back of your computer that is identical to the one you are plugging it into now, and try plugging it into that.
