|
|
I have a problem with "switch user". The process of switching from one user to another freezes as the second user's desktop appears (after around 10 seconds). I could do anything i want in that 10 seconds, then it completely freezes. The start menu does not work or any other mouse or keyboard stroke. At this point the only way out is to switch my laptop off and start again.
The only way to avoid the freeze at "switch user" is for the first user to
log out completely before the second user logs in, which is not what I want
Any ideas for solving this would be great.
I have windows XP sp3

How long have you waited for it to unfreeze? Because if you wait like 15 minutes and it still doesn't unfreeze then it could be something with that user's profile that causes explorer to freeze. But next time it freezes, try ctrl+alt+delete and using task manager to kill explorer.exe and then run explorer.exe again (File>run...). Sometimes, for w/e crazy windows reason, explorer just likes to shit the bed on login. I think wiggles' solution would work.

As was said above, it might be too much stress on your CPU, trying to keep 2 different desktops. | This works. I had an explorer problem, but was solved by deleting the account and making a new one.

Does the screen black out when it freezes? Well actually, it should black out when you switch to the 'choose user menu'. But the screen didn't change for you, right?

try pressing numlock like 30-40 times when the computer freezes, if the light still changes off and on then it is a program freezing, indicating a high level software issue. If the numlock key doesnt change the status light on your keyboard then it is a low level issue.
Just and old trick.
