hi, my mom is planning to buy a new pc next month
she is worried that if there are already 2 pc's here at home,
maybe the electric bill will be doubled
Questions:
1. is there a software that tells me how much electricity is my pc consuming?
2. what should i do with my pc to decrease its electricity consumption?
3. does LCD (flat) monitor really use less electricity that the big (cube-like) monitor?

1. It will only double the bill if the only thing in your house running is a PC.
2 .You can open the PC and check the PSU for the amount of electricity it'll use, and a new one should/might have it on the box, turn them off at night and enable power saving when idle for > x minutes to reduce power consumption while it's being used.
3. No clue.

LCD monitors use a lot less electricity than CRT monitors but I find that my LCD monitor gives off a fair bit of heat.

Lol no it doesn't give out mass amounts of heat but putting your hand over top of it you can tell that it's giving some heat off. The larger the LCD the more heat it will give off and you can really notice the change if your in a enclosed room on a summer day.

Yes I noticed that too on my 22" LCD Monitor.
As most of you shoukd know, heat rises.
When I touch the top frame of my Monitor, I can feel it's warmth.
It's usually nothing to worry about unless it burns you or so...

Eh? Well infact different computers does spend different amount of electricity. The max power is decied by the psu and the amount of power needed is decided by the amount of stuff you have in your computer (gpu,fans,hdd,cd-rom etc)
So it's impossible to say. Ofc it can double the bill but that would be a badass computer unless you have other stuff connectned than the computer at your home.
In general a flat screen uses less power aswell as other components different screens require differnt ammoutns of power.

there are electricity meters you can plug in between your computer and the electricity socket. I use one myself. E.g my comp and screen combined use idle 200Watt, and under load 500 Watt, abnd when suspended only 5 Watt

I lold.
a computer doesnt use nearly enough electricity to make the bill rise more then 20 - 30 bucks. I dont even think it will rise that much.
I have tvs running 24/7, 6 pcs, AC, and regular every day things, and the bill doesnt even exceed $400. Also, all pcs have this thing called power saving.

Both machines I've built for the home just put themselves into sleep if they are left alone for like 15-20 minutes. Takes just a couple seconds to get back to Windows too, so nice.

Christ your bill is high, I run a projector and high powered amp on my HT a few hours a day playing xbawks, and leave my PC on 24/7, and the girlfriend is constantly playing PS3 on an 32" CRT, and my bill is like 60-70/mo.
@OP the cost of running a modern PC 24/7 is like nothing. If money's that big of an issue, put it in sleep mode when you're not using it.

Yes, something like that, it measures the current Watt usage, total kWh, etc...
Some even have a function that calculates how much it'll cost if you give it the cost per kWh
I use this one:

Good ones also allow you to program your electricity tariff in (i.e. $ per kWh) so that it can calculate exactly how much your PC is costing you to run per hour and how much it has cost you over the last day/week/month.
Some of them also allow you to program in tariffs that alter over the day - I think mine is around £0.125/kWh in the day, £0.095/kWh from 10pm to 5am on the Economy 7 tariff.
