Sometime this year, I might have linux installed, but keeping windows.
As of right now, windows occupies a little over 50% of my space (16 gigs left over). If I shrunk that partition to about 2 gigs, would it still function well if I wanted to boot into it at any time?

EDIT: I was considering these distros. Which one should I use?
Kubuntu
Arch Linux
Fedora
Gentoo
Debian

Some time, I might develop my own Linux (iunno, whenever I want?) but I got to start somewhere, right?

It seems your HDD is quite small, I'd suggest getting a larger one before trying to dual-boot. Anyway, Arch Linux or Gentoo.

Very small. Just under 40gb.
If I'm lucky, I might get an alienware for my birthday (don't bitch how cheaper it can be if I built it, because quite frankly, I don't give a shit).
Maybe when I get the money, I might buy a 250 EXTHD or 1TB.

You've asked the question in a forum where people favour Arch Linux and/or Gentoo because somehow they are "more pro" and "faster".

My rule of thumb: choose whichever distro that configures ALL your devices properly (and automatically), because if you don't get all devices working, you might not be getting the best experience you could.

Versions also matter. Ubuntu 8.10 is more compatible with my comp better than 9.04.

I might go with Arch Linux. If I have problems with it, I will go Kubuntu. Thanks guys.
EDIT: My question about the C drive being shrunk to two gigs left over was never answered -.-

I just said I would try it, but if I have problems, then stick with Kubuntu. Also, if moderators are wondering why I am posting from a different ip, I'm at my father's house right now.
But I still need my second question answered. I heard that once you only have 500mb of space left, windows will no longer start/function correctly, something like that. I would think 2gb would be enough to run windows.

And I saw another vote for Fedora. I visited their website and saw screenies and enjoyed what I saw. Guess I gotta flip a coin.

I think you should try all of them... but in order from worst -> best... so

Kubuntu
Fedora
Debian
Arch Linux
Gentoo

And then you can just stay with Gentoo because you will like it the best.

Lol at Kubuntu. I like how it is so smooth to me as I migrated from windows. I'll look at Gentoo.
EDIT: For the love of god! Will someone please answer my question regarding disk space!

The minimum requirement for it is 1.5gb I would keep it to around 3gb, also I would HIGHLY recommend Ubuntu because I have used it myself and the user friendly-ness of it is very appealing to me. It has install packages for programs and also it is almost like Windows 7 in a slight way.

There is your reply for you Noz :]
