Just make sure you have the latest version and hit ignore on whatever you're using.
An old version had an exploit with DCC sending/receiving, but it's fixed in the newer versions. There's also a router exploit for it, but most servers have checks for it and kill anyone who tries to do it.

I just tried to download it and it blocked the installer. 6.35 is the current version, which it blocked.

Problem is that those ports are already open, and no anti virus in the world will prevent the already accepted torrent program to be breached, and once it's breached and executing code, it's a little too late.
And really, just keep your torrent program up to date.
Staying up to date is generally the best way to stay virus free
Or at least, disable the resident scan, and just scan on occasion (and make sure it's not set to auto clean "infected" files...)

When I first got my newest laptop, I started torrenting with no AV and I got a svchost virus. Had to reformat. Wasnt a big deal because I had like nothing on it, but still. Thats why I like vista, it doesnt need an AV because it prompts on programs trying to run if it doesnt like it.
I have things like scan and auto update and everything off. I update it as I need to and scan only when I have an issue. Other wise it runs in the back using almost no ram.

oh, that svchost virus wasn't due to torrenting, that's a vulnerability in unpatched windows XP systems. I once made the mistake of installing XP without the firewall on. A few minutes after I was finished installing it got infected
So thats why I install without network attached, then enable the firewall on the network port, and then attach it to the net and do a windows update

Oh, well I got it with windows firewall up. But eitherway, I have the AV just so I can scan instead of slowly skim through system32/volume info for viruses. I don't know about you, but thats where I find most of mine >-> (as stupidly obvious as that sounds). But I set it to ignore anyway. Its not like it can do anything considering I havnt been on irc in a month now.

protip: Download from a trusted site, not random shitty places. PRIVATE TRACKERS.
Also, I only need to forward 1 port for utorrent...
Heavy downloading does not have to mean you can't download intelligently.
