This is not started by a virus. It was in fact started by microsoft. Microsoft XP SP3.
My father (who doesn't live with me) has a problem with his computer, which is stated in the title (no shit). He called me (4 times while I was sleeping) to tell me after he installed windows XP SP3, he tried to start windows and got that error.
He cannot do anything in windows, not even safe mode. I don't know if he has a windows installation disk to use the recovery console (which I don't know how to use ) or to repair system files.
And the question SF was looking for
What the hell can I do? He would rather not reformat though, since he already has a bunch of games installed (diablo II and other things ).

Nothing you can really do without a installation disc.
Try get a hold of one and do a repair installation.

So what's the point of this topic? You know what he needs, and your post didn't even contain a question.

And the system file recovery thing, I've never toyed around with that. It pretty much replaces the current sys32 and/or the registry, right?

I'd see if you can install another OS onto a mall partition and backup any data he needs, then format, but since he has no disd he'll likely have to buy one, or borrow one from a friend, see if he can get one of XP SP2 (3? if they make installation discs for 3) and try to repair.

Leave this thread open, because I never toyed around with XP Installation or repairing.

If you burn a LiveCD of linux (Ubuntu works), you can just boot from the CD and back his stuff up on a thumb drive.
Might be easier than the method SF suggested.
