When I get my new computer, should I go for Windows 7 64 or 32 bit?

64 is better
you can install all 32 programs in 64 the only real change is that it lets you use more RAM

It isn't better if you don't have over 4gb of ram, also 32bit is better supported.
I would highly recommend if you have less than or equal to 4GB of ram get 32bit, if greater than 4gb of ram get 64bit.
There is pretty much no more need to discuss this.

Erm, why? 64bit is just as compatible as 32bit now. Try to come out of the dark ages and use what your CPU was designed to run.

You know, I'll agree with this one. The more people decide to utilize 64-bit versions of things the more the newer technology will be utilized by developers. In my opinion, it's kind of a shame that Microsoft won't just man up and start dropping support for 32-bit operating systems. Unfortunately, I suppose, it would kill sales to anyone with an outdated system.
A man can dream, though. A man can dream...

I imagine 64 bit code can be faster than their 32 bit counterparts.
Less register pressure

If you go 64-bit, remember that several useful tools won't be able to work for 100%
Also, printer sharing over the network when the system with the printer is 32-bit, will not work if you're using 64-bit
And if you're a new programmer and want to play with assembler and want to start out with the basics (realmode) then that won't work either, microsoft hasn't implemented virtual8086 in the 64-bit version

Next time you post, one thing to try and improve is the dumbassness presented.
The RAM limit imposed on 32-bit systems is a combination of VRAM and SRAM. That means if you have a video card with 1GB of VRAM, your computer will only register 3GB of SRAM.

32 bit is nearing the end of its run. you can see the way that the market is leaning with the upcoming release of server 2008 R2 which comes in 64 bit edition only. it will not be long before personal computer OSs do this as well. IMO you may as well embrace this clearly inevitable change else you'll soon be along with the bunch still hanging onto their 16 bit systems..
and don't come out with some shit like linux, blah blah blah. linux is nowhere near practical nor user friendly enough for home users in its current state..

I'm just happy that Microsoft plans to keep a 32-bit version of Windows 7 for my old laptop.
Offtopic: Anyone know why they call it x86?
