Avira Antivirus Free was recommended to me by a friend, and I have fallen in love. I would also recommend Kaspersky, but that isn't free.

I love ESET NOD32. It probably saved my computer 30 times.

+1 for ESET NOD32, Kaspersky is pretty good too (I think it has a more thorough scan although I could be wrong).

avast, both free and payable. better than kaspersky. easy to use and have saved me alot

Avast, Avira, and ESET are all live scanners. They will detect viruses while they are downloading.

Yep.
Kaspersky uses more RAM, but looks prettier.

The instance of Kaspersky I have running right now is only using 33MB of RAM at the moment. I think I can spare that much.
