All of my icons have become the icon that you get if there is an unknown file on screen. I would like some help on restoring them all. On some files, like the Firefox shortcut on my desktop, I can restore the icon by going to it's properties, clicking on the icon it is currently on, and then clicking apply.
When I try to change the icon on folders, then it just goes back to what it was, the unknown file icon. I think my icon files are messed up, because there are a lot of files that won't go back, even if I try to change them back.
I'll provide a screen shot(s) in a second.

I'm going to update to Vista. Turned out my long lost install disk was in my mothers office for the past year. I'm assuming that by installing Vista, all system32 files will be reset to Windows Vista files right?

Open notepad and enter this text. Then save the pad named iconrepair.reg
After you saved it double click it and click yes to the promt.
Or manually go to it in regedit.
After you have this reboot your pc and it should be good.
Code: |
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer]
"Max Cached Icons"="4096"
|
If that doesnt fix it do this:
Empty your trash and delete all your desktop icons except system folders "My Computer, My Documents, Network Neighborhood, Recycle Bin etc...
Reboot the pc then restore your shortcuts from the trash. Then you should be ok.
