My friend is having trouble downgrading OS's from Vista 32 to XP 64.
He tells me that he gets a BSOD everytime he tries to install XP 64.
He wants to know if a RAID driver is needed to install XP64.

Is his computer sufficient enough to use a x64 OS?

AKA his cpu might not even support x64 bit code.

Most modern CPUs (i.e. those running an OEM/RTM copy of Vista) are usually more than capable of executing the x86-64 instruction set.
No, a RAID driver is not needed for an installation of Windows XP. XP 64-bit is not the best choice for a 64-bit OS; Vista is much better, and Windows 7 RC is even better. It's more than a matter of opinion though: for the most part, driver support with XP 64-bit is worse than with Vista/W7 64-bit. A notable number of Windows XP components (ones written and integrated into the OS) are not even native 64-bit applications, although they will probably still run fine. I'm just saying that XP 64-bit is a bit of a premature operating system, even though it's been out to the market for quite a few years.
What does the BSOD say, exactly?

No, the PC Model, has nothing to do with it.
Send us an Image/Text/Dump of the BSOD, that would be of real help...

OEM based machines (if that is what your friend has), they 99.9% of the time will change the SATA port configuration in order to enable hot swap and eSATA functionality.
You may need to check the bios and look at the SATA settings.

You only need to use a RAID/SATA driver if you're running your SATA drive(s) in Raid or AHCI modes. And superweapons is correct about the 64-bit XP. Its driver base is lacking, among other things, and I wouldn't have considered it as a switch from Vista on a new computer.

The reason I want it is because so I could find XP64-bit drivers for whatever he is using.
Please don't assume and as before, don't be childish.

If he gets BSOD upon installing its most likely the SATA driver.
1. If he has a floppy drive, place the correct drivers on a floppy and insert it during install
2. If he does not have a floppy drive, get the program called nLite and import the drivers into your OS image (.iso file)

the difference between xp-32 and xp-64 is very big compared to vista-32 and vista-64.
it's been known that some CPUs don't exactly like xp-64 (or vice versa) while linux-64 and vista-64 install just fine on the same architecture.
a RAID driver is not needed unless... you're on RAID configuration.
(btw, isn't the xp installer blue by default? that's not death yet  )
