it's all just eye candy. It's not necessairy for anyone to have a keyboard like that IMO. It would be fun to play around with for a while but ultimately I'd go back to a regular keyboard sooner or later =/

That is really stupid to get.
Quote: | Revolutionary Keyboard Features a tiny OLED screen on each key. 113 screens total. | Why the fuck do you need a screen for the key? Do you really want to change the arrangement of the keys on your keyboard? There is a reason why each key in a qwerty keyboard is where it is. It is specifically designed to be arranged so that the letters used most often are in the easiest places to get to.
Quote: | Each key can be individually programmed to perform a series of functions, open an application or run an Applescript (Mac only) | It is Mac only because you can do that with any keyboard in Windows.
Quote: | Various System Monitor functions can dynamically display on a key including CPU usage, CPU temperature, Network Speed, and Memory Usage | But now I can't use rainmeter! Who cares? It is completely redundant for you to know that information at every second anyway.
Quote: | Play a GIF animation or Quicktime movie on a Key | Wait...what?
Quote: | Paint images across all keys at once in your image editor of choice | Ooh, a sticker! Let me put this on my keyboard now.
Quote: | Key sets can be linked to an application, so whenever you open that app the appropriate keys come up | Does that mean that you don't have the full keyboard normally?
Ok, everything has that now.
Quote: | Use any language with the appropriate key images including Cyrillic, Ancient Greek, Georgian, Arabic, Quenya, and Hiragana.
Display notes, numerals, special symbols, HTML codes, math functions or any other special symbol.
Any key (or to be exact, a unit consisting of a cap, a microchip and a display) can be easily removed by hands to be cleaned or replaced | This is the only thing that makes the keyboard worth any more than a regular one, but not $1,589 more.

Optimus Maximus is:
1. Expensive...
2. Chunky keys.
3. Cool for gaming because keys have the gun icons etc
4. Cool because it has nice shortcut keys on the far left.
It would be hard to use in the first stage but after a while you'd get used to the big keys.
Main downside is going to be the price...

Stupid.
1. I never look at the keyboard when I type, be it MS Word or playing a game.
2. Anyone that buys an expensive keyboard is mentally retarded. My 10 year old keyboard has worked fine since day 1.
3. Gimmicky 'artsy' crap.

Exactly. All you pay for is the eyecandy. Which isn't worth THAT much (:
But if it was the same price as a regular keyboard, I might concider it.. But I guess I wouldn't even buy it anyway.

Lol? You do know that the qwerty keyboard was designed to be ineffective? Typewriter's were typing too fast and breaking the typewriters, so they changed the key formation to slow them down.

Since we're talking about Keyboard layouts, I googled around and found the Dvorak-Layout .. Take a look at it. It's damn confusing because we're all used to QWERTZ, QWERTY or AZERTY

Price:
$1,599.99
No fucking way. $1600 for a keyboard? My PC doesn't even cost that much!
It does have some cool features, though it's designed for a max, so fail there.

Quote: | Consider the humble computer keyboard. It's one of the most important tools in our daily lives, but the keyboard long predates the PC. Our modern keyboard design—known as QWERTY for its first row of letter keys—was designed in 1868 by printer Christopher Sholes for use on manual typewriters. Sholes needed to find a way to slow typists down and keep them from hitting the keys too fast, which could jam the machine. So he took the most commonly used letters, banished them to the edges of the keyboard and placed common letter combinations far away from each other. The result: A keyboard that was intentionally inefficient.
Years passed, and the need to slow typists down disappeared. Eventually, we started using computers, which have no practical speed limit at all. But the inefficient keyboard layout persisted, out of custom and habit. As a result—nearly 140 years after Sholes created his keyboard layout—modern computer users are stuck with an obsolete design that not only slows us down, but also can cause crippling hand injuries.
Yet we still use it. Countless alternative keyboard designs have been proposed through the years—August Dvorak's eponymous layout is the most famous—but none have stuck. There's just not enough momentum to switch, and any keyboard maker that manufactured a different layout would likely get burned. So it seems we're stuck with QWERTY.
The keyboard is not the only tool that no longer makes sense. In this special report, we look at a number of topics that are begging for reinvention. We tackle prescription drug patents, sports, prisons, spying, the university system and the nature of reality. We look at ways you can reinvent yourself, ditching bad habits and changing your image. We even take a fresh look at life itself and imagine what it would be like if we could redo evolution. |
