Don't install Linux because you think Ubuntu's "trendy" or something.
Linux-based operating systems are great, if there is a steeper learning curve, but if you're going to be using one, it's worth it to learn what you're doing.
Keir Thomas has some Ubuntu books out you might want to find: Beginning Ubuntu Linux 3/e is on Amazon for like 27 bucks. Not much changed since when it was written, but 4/e's on the way ~7/27.

Ubuntu is an operating system that uses the Linux kernel.
Linux may be used to describe either a Linux-based OS or the kernel itself.
In fact there are quite a few "flavors" of Linux, including Ubuntu (and its variety of derivatives), Linux Mint, Slax, Debian, Gentoo, Arch Linux, Fedora, OpenSUSE, and over nine thousand others I don't feel like typing.
I would recommend a dual-boot if you haven't already installed.

So you are asking that question AFTER you're installing it?

Well done, you made yourself look like a complete moron. Seriously, you should only install things, or buy stuff if you know it's good. Saves you money.

The Linux kernel, available here is open source, and there is a wide range of open-source programmed under GPL, the GNU Public License with available sources (and sometimes community-maintained).
Most of the Linux operating systems are open-source besides some server OSes like Red Hat.

Thanks for that Karakawe.

Also Ubuntu is a great OS, but the latest distro (Jaunty Judice I think) has trouble running RuneScape. It is not a gaming OS.
