When you mean 'Passport HD', did you mean Portable HD?
If you did then yes. Most new Portable HDD you get from shops are going to be the same as the laptop ones. However (and I mean however) there are some 2.5" HDD that are either pinned or slotted, meaning one type will have pins and the other will have you to slide it in (Just like a usb).
First check whether your warranty is over (incase you have it, because if you open it you may void it), and secondly check whether yours is pinned or flat.

Know whether the HDD interface is IDE or SATA. I don't know about the portable drive, though. Is it just in an enclosure?

There is no difference between a internal and external HD, an external HD is basically a internal drive put into an enclosure.
If you want an external HD, just get an enclosure put your HD in and viola!
External HD.
The Velociraptor is also 2.5", but it will not fit into laptops.
