They are the same exact thing... Except one is free (openoffice), one works with linux (openoffice), one is proprietary (ms office), one is conformist (ms office), one you have to download (openoffice).

Localhost, is it 100% the exact same thing though? I mean, necessarily you don't have to PAY for MS Office, that's just a hoop they try to get the kiddies to jump through. We all know they don't need that $ xD
But back to the question at hand, does MS Office and OpenOffice differ in any features or speed/performance or user-friendliness?
I'm a long time user of MS Office, though I dislike the majority of MS products, and think I might switch over to OpenOffice if it's really got any pro's over the very useful MS Office.

I personally still prefer to use MS Office, although it's hard to beat a quality, free open-source suite like OpenOffice. Maybe it's because I'm just too used to the weird new ribbon interface in Office 2007 and just how the GUI works all around.
I doubt OpenOffice would bring a huge performance increase, but who really needs a performance increase in an office suite. Unless you have an insanely slow computer, speed shouldn't be a problem.

My school uses OpenOffice. The school computers are soooo slow, I don't notice any pros...Plus, my school doesn't DL torrents for MS Office 2007, it's like they don't know about it. o_O

Office is pretty obviously superior.
Anyone that has used both extensively should be able to tell.

I say Microsoft Office...
But if you can't buy or download a copy then go with openoffice as it's your only resort...
it seconds to Microsoft Office.

That is a difficult statement to decipher... Since you could be referring to Microsoft Office or Open Office.
Also, it would be better to state why you think x Office is bette.

although open office is free and practically the same thing as ms office. we live in a ms office world, most people wouldn't be able to open an open office document, as open office is not compatible with ms office.

And he is still completely wrong. OpenOffice does have their own special format (.something or other) that MS office cannot open... But you can save a document in OpenOffice in ANY format you would like (98 MS office, 2k MS office etc).

OpenOffice is free, cross-platform, and open-source. MS Office may have more features, but unless you absolutely need them for your work or something, OpenOffice is my pick.
Office is upwards from 150 bucks, and that's not even the full suite.
