|
|
So, the thing is: I share an internet connection with my dad thru a modem. Its a 12mbit internet connection.
When my dad is downloading with Utorrent or emule, my internet gets really fucking slow. It doesnt matter if he's downloading with 12kb/s or 100 kb/s or 600kb/s, my internet gets really really slow.
Is this normal?

Enable QoS in your router settings, give your computers IP/MAC/port higher priority.

The modem is what your cable or phone line plugs into, that gives you internet. It's then run into a box that sorts the packets and branches out the data to multiple computers, that's your router.
If you can find out the model of your router, I can help you from there.

I only have 1 "box", in which the phone line is plugged and both my fathers and my computer are connected to

You may have a combination modem/router, or simply a modem with a DHCP, in either case it unfortunately most likely won't support QoS. There's not a whole lot else you can do other than to purchase a router with QoS.

The problem is that your dad is uploading too much. Let's say you download at 600KB/s, and upload at 100KB/s. If you download at 10KB/s, you'll still upload at 100KB/s. That's how BitTorrent works.
When that happens, you can't upload anything because there's no upload bandwidth left, so that affects your browsing. Have him limit his upload to a certain speed (maybe 10% less than his max upload) and see if that helps.

His upload speed is never above 50kb/s, so thats not the problem either :S
