Core 2 Duo is a newer technology.

They both use the same technology (based on the Core 2 architecture), except the Pentium Dual Core has less level 2 cache, so lower performance in games and applications. Also, Pentium Dual Cores are offered at lower FSBs and core frequencies than the Core 2 Duo line. It's worth noting that the Pentium Dual Core is based on the older 65nm line of Core 2 microprocessors, so you're not getting a Wolfdale 45nm chip.

You can usually get a good deal on Pentium Dual Cores. They perform well, and have a lot of OC room. The loss of L2 cache isn't too bad. Last time I checked, they were a good amount cheaper than comparable Core 2 Duos with extra cache, yet they performed similarly.
It really depends on the exact models you are comparing, and their prices.

| Pentium Dual Cores are 'reject' Core 2 Duos. They have the same architecture, just lower clock speeds, L2 cache, and FSB. If you are getting a PDC, get the E5200. Those things can reach over 3 GHz on AIR. That's within 10% performance of the E8400 at stock, for half the price.
