I use AVG free and it's pretty good, tried advast and it sucks, slow like Norton when scanning and hogs my ram.

AVG 8 is the best anti-virus I've ever used.

Avira AntiVir PE Classis is free, and it has the highest detection rates at the moment. Cleanly beating all other AV's. It also sports a small system footprint (low CPU & RAM utilization). On those two points alone its a no-brainer.

I know several people who use this in conjunction with a free firewall app. Something like Comodo Firewall Pro is great with it. Again a low resource-overhead. I used that combination myself once. The firewall is probably a little overkill with the prompts for most, but all-in-all a great product.

I urge anyone using some of the paid solutions like Mcafee or Nortons, to start looking elsewhere when their subscription nears its end. Why pay a monthly/yearly fee for a program which is heavy, slow, a pain and has a lower effectiveness than these free alternatives?

I got avg free its best antivirus northon and others arent as good as avg.
