I've never used sp3, but it's supposed to be faster and more secure. I'd give it a try.

I've been using SP3 for a while now.
It seems to run a bit smoother and for me it fixed
most of the cases where explorer.exe crashed on SP2.
(theres a HUUUGE list of fixes on microsoft's site)

I'd say you should all update to SP3.

Although this is old news, but for those with AMD based systems made by OEM (Dell, HP, Sony, etc...). in some cases after installing SP3 your system may not boot or go into a looping restart.

The cause of this is due to laziness where a image for Intel based system are deployed into AMD based machines.

To to a prevention from happening, before installing SP3 to a registry change

In the registry editor navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>ControlSet001>Services>Intelppm

On the right hand side, change the "Dword" value from a "1" to a "4"
Restart and then install SP3.

Note: For DIYers with AMD based systems this is not necessary unless you perform the same type of laziness.

problems with sp3=software incapability
stick with sp2 for now Cool

What are you talking about?

I've been installing sp3 immediately when it was released on countless different systems and so far there are no problems.

SP3 had issue with ZoneAlarm, but that's ZoneAlarm's problem not Microsoft. Also there is a fix by ZA which fixes that problem.

It's really all about security, they took out the address bar in SP3. Tho you can google it to find the dll that fixes that.

The only thing I would bear in mind is the HD audio installation. They may have fixed it by now, but when I first tried XP SP3 (just before the final release) I had issues with XP detecting my HD audio bus correctly, thus preventing me from installing my audio driver. It could be worked-around by using a fix for this issue, but it might not be completely stable. I rolled back to SP2 at that point and never tried it again. Just ensure that if you do have a HD audio chip that you be vigilante Wink Everything else with it was great. All the fixed/updates rolled into one. Its a good idea.

i agree. the only minor problem i've ever had was with installing a fairly old program or something that stated it required "service pack 2 or higher". it wouldn't run install under sp3 because it checked the registry and saw a 3 instead of a 2 (quite shocking programming if you ask me). all i had to do was tweak one registry entry, and then change it back (or just wait for it to automatically change when i restarted).

What? I haven't heard of any serious issues with SP3, and I highly doubt they'll be releasing a new service pack for XP.
