So far i have 512MB and this computer is really, really old.
My brother says that my computer cant handle 2GB RAM so im trying either 512MB or 1GB

I think 1 Gb is possible, open up your case and see if there are free RAM slots. If possible, download CpuZ to see what ram you have (DDR or DDR2).
btw, i really don't know why 2 Gb isn't possible as long as there are enough RAM slots and you've got the right type of RAM, it should be possible.

I have 2 slots and currently im using one for the 512MB RAM. Oh btw i have only like $100 to spend since my mum used like $900 for SOIL...

Don't you mean Mhz of RAM, if the RAM's too fast, the motherboard will use it as fast as it can handle it (800mhz ram, 533 mhz mobo, ram speed is 533mhz).
The size is limited by the operating system (32 or 64 bit), but still, on 32 bit, you can add up to 4 Gb.

Nope I don't mean speed. Every motherboard has a maximum amount of memory they can support. Like 8, 4, or 2 GB or something.
Edit: The area I bolded is incorrect even if you have a 32 bit OS your computer will still use your ram. It may not show it, but as long as your bios is reading it your computer is using it.

Some mainboards can only handle a small amount of ram
Seeing the specs of his pc it isnt a very new computer so i think it can handle 1-2 gb

That is not true.
Motherboards have a limited amount of RAM they can use.

take a look at mobos on newegg. it will say max memory supported...
