Well I have a 8 month old PC
with the following specs

1.6Ghz Celeron processor
1gig of ram
Integrated graphics

ya I know not much but this is for my mom only, she does basic stuff

It had come with vista and was like super slow!
So then i went to XP(of course making recovery disks of vista)
Well even now it is a bit slow

So will Ubuntu be fine on it?
and Linux and Ubuntu are they the same thing?
Should i go back to vista, If so, How would i make it run faster

Suggestions?

The specs you have will run XP just fine. It's most likely the trial software that came with your recovery disc that's making it slow. Uninstall all software that you don't need and you will see a difference. First place to start is to wipe out that trail antivirus they've put in.

As for Ubuntu which is also a linux distro, if you're curious about it try it out, but if it's for your mom and you don't live with her, then I wouldn't recommend it.

XP should run just fine on that machine. If you're using a clean copy of XP without bloatware, the bottleneck is likely the hard drive, and a new one in order.

I installed Ubuntu on my parents computer and they love it, but if you have a slow hard drive don't expect much more from Ubuntu than XP.

Ubuntu is fine for people who do basically little stuff...

For word processing Ubuntu has OpenOffice, which looks almost exactly like microsoft word.

For emailing they have some client, which looks nice IMO!

The Internet has Firefox...

Thats all Smile

And don't forget all of these cool effects you can do with Ubuntu.
If you got a decent graphic card, check out Compiz Fusion.
