I'm going to upgrade my computer soon and I'm wondering which would be best to get first for games? a new video card or a new processor
What I have now:
intel dual core (NOT core 2 duo) @ 1.6 ghz (sigh)
nvidia 8600 GT
3 gb ram
I know video cards are usually the better choice obviously but I'm not sure since my processor is shit...

Update the processor. E8400 is the best choice. Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz, only at around $200. Check your motherboard to see if it will work with your mobo.

If your going to get the E8400 Core 2 Duo 3.0Ghz, instead get the Q6600 Quad Core

The Intel Pentium Dual Core is actually a Core 2 Duo chip with its FSB and cache stripped in half or more. But it's still a Core 2 Duo just with a different name.
Read here if you want to know more about your current cpu
Getting a new cpu would be the better choice as your graphic card still gots some punch in it.

Your GPU is weak. I would recommend overclocking your CPU at least to 2.0-2.2GHz then getting a new GPU. Even the shittiest of boards will take the chip that far. Also your chip is C2D based, just with less cache which isn't that big of a deal.
You will see much more of an increase in gaming with a better graphics card.
