1. | Code: | "Ian Chimenko admitted Tuesday in Berks County Juvenile Court that he randomly stabbed four students at Antietam Middle-Senior High School because other students were bullying him. Judge Scott E. Lash found Chimenko delinquent on four counts of aggravated assault and possessing a weapon on school property in the Jan. 9 stabbings. Lash ordered Chimenko placed in a residential program at the Devereux Kanner center in West Chester, a facility specializing in Asperger’s syndrome, a mental disorder characterized by lack of social skills. Chimenko, 13, of the 900 block of Carsonia Avenue, Pennside, could be under the court’s supervision until he turns 21, officials said. Lash agreed to a request from Chimenko’s attorney, James E. Gavin of Wyomissing, to exclude the media from the hearing because his client has mental health problems. Assistant District Attorney Catherine J. Nadirov said she did not object to closing the hearing because the victims, who are juveniles, did not want a public hearing. Chimenko randomly stabbed the four victims, Nadirov said after the hearing. Nadirov said Chimenko, an eighth-grader, claimed his classmates had bullied him. “There was no evidence that the victims were the ones who were bullying him,” Nadirov said. She said Chimenko was still grieving about the loss of his father, Peter E., who died in a one-car accident in Alsace Township in July 2002.
Gavin also said Chimenko claimed he was bullied in school. “He’s a good kid,” Gavin said. “Life dealt him a difficult hand.” Gavin said Chimenko’s family is grateful he will receive help. Chimenko’s aunt, Marge VanCleef, 72, of Bryn Mawr, Montgomery County, said her nephew was a well-behaved young man who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome. “He was very sorry for what he did,” VanCleef said. “He was a victim of being bullied by people for several years. He was very hurt by people. This was very sad.” VanCleef said she was glad her nephew will receive treatment. According to police: Chimenko burst into an English classroom and stabbed Jasmen Clark, 15, in the back below her left shoulder. He then wounded Melissa Roman, 13, and Joshua Haller, 15, as they went to help Clark. A fourth student suffered a minor injury. That student’s name was unavailable. Students took the knife away from Chimenko. The school principal, Dr. James W. Snyder, and some teachers subdued Chimenko until police arrived. All the victims were treated for minor stab wounds." |
