So I was thinking about this.

Would it be smart to get 2 solid state drives and put them in Raid (0) then just buy 2 hard drives that spin at 10,000 RPM (with high cache, 1.5G) then put those in raid but use the HD in raid mode for your memory storage.

I know I might seem fuzzy.

Long story short:
Use SST in raid
Use HD in raid to store actual memory but use the SST for other stuff.

Do I make sense? and if I do, is it a good idea?

SSD is like 1/10th of the storage then a regular hard drive that costs about the same. I suggest Raid for hard drives.

But wouldn't having 2 SSD in raid and using the actual hard drives for actual storage make things (Data retrieval) faster?

Oh I thought you were asking which was the best. Yeah that works pretty good as well too. But I mean, you are saving like 1/5th of a second using SSD and well that whole configuration isn't really worth it. Just go and buy 2 320 GB with 7500 RPM. Works well enough.

Are you SURE the performance gain would not be much greater?

Because I am pretty sure it would. I just have no way of testing my theory.

I don't see the amount of money needing to be spent on a SSD to be offering a great increase in overall performance.

Personally, I'd stick to the standard HDD. WD Raptors look pretty nice.

I really don't know. Wait for slovach/cheetah/superweapons.

RAID 0 is retarded, hell yes array goes up in flames if a drive decides to fail.

Unless you're into cutting .6 seconds off your DUST 2 load times while increasing risk for drive failure.

Unless you're doing video capturing or have some specific need for high sustained transfer rates, you'll find RAID is a waste of time.

Now cutting seek times on the other hand will be somewhat beneficial. Going with a single Raptor or an SSD would be a good choice. My advice would be an SSD or two(seeing as they're so small and don't fail mechanically, RAID 0 would be justified.), just for your OS and most used programs. Get a big 7200RPM drive for storage.
