err guys, just wondering:
i'm in the process of building my own comp, and the only thing i need left are the processor and the OS [vital stuff!]

so like, the processor:first of all, i chose Intel b/c it won't overheat as much as AMD.
out of all the intel processors, which should i buy?
I considered a 2.66 ghz quad core processor for about 350$. Some ppl say it's a waste, and i heard from one guy that w/o a server, you can only use 2 cores out of the 4...
If i dont get a quad core, I'm stuck with the most powerful core 2 duo processor, which is about 3.66 ghz, 250$.

Also, for my OS, I'm not sure If i should buy XP Professional, or go with Linux. [I'm not going anywhere near vista...]
I heard ubuntu is very good, but i'm not sure what version to consider. [Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Xubuntu?]

Either way, I need some opinions fast Very Happy
thanks again guys!

First of all, Vista is great.

Second of all, go with a Q6600 as your processor.

Third of all, Go with Ubuntu if you want something legally free, Vista if you are cool.

Not entirely. The program you're going to run has to support multi-threading (WinRAR decompression is a good example of multi-threading-if you enable it).

If you're getting a fast system (dual core, 2GB of RAM), then you should consider Vista. It's really good as long as you meet the recommended requirements.

You should get a quad core, more and more applications are being written to take advantage of multiple processing cores and threads. The Q6600 should suit most everyone's needs fine.

It also helps a lot when many programs are being run at the same time.

Id go for:
OS:Vista Home Premium/Ultimate 32/64bit
CPU:Intel Q6600 2.4ghz/Q6700 2.66GHZ/ Q9450 2.66GHZ but L2 Cache and FSB is faster.

What that person saif about 2 and 4 cores isn't always true.
You Window's OS will use all 4 cores.
App's may use 2 or 4 cores.
The latest tech games will use quad core but earlier games may use 2.

Or you can choose q9300 as your CPU. It's slightly better than q6600. (At least it's more price-worthy over here in sweden)
