Alright, i've had it with vista, it runs way too slow.
I'm not planning on buying XP, but still want a legal OS.
So the obvious solution would be linux, but now the question, will it improve my pc's performance and which one should i take.
I'm a music producer (dual booting is possible, i'll use vista for my music if needed), have a 250 GB harddisk (150 free) and want a stable OS for normal use, i'm not a professional.
Also, can i chat with people on AIM and WLM in Linux? _________________

Alright, downloading ubuntu.
You think it will make a large difference on this hardware?
CPU Intel Pentium DualCore E2160 1,8GHZ
RAM Samsung 2x1024MB DDR2 400MHZ
MOBO MSI Boston
GFX Intel GMA

For Ubuntu, you can try their live CD before you actually install it.
I prefer Sabayon, even I'm still learning on it, at least you get those special 3D effects right on the live disc.

Yep, first i'm trying the live CD (burning ISO now)
also if i install it on a new partition, will i be able to acces the data on the Vista partition? Or should i use the 'install inside windows' option, because i don't really feel like burning almost 100 GB on 4,7GB DVD's.
info about installation inside windows: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/howtos/howto_install_linux_risk_free_with_no_formatting_or_repartitioning_required?page=0%2C1
EDIT: To kls, i don't think it would be faster with nice 3D effects, because that's one of the reasons i'm ditching vista. _________________

I've ran the Sabayon live disc on a intel GMA 950 (minimum to support Aero Glass) with 1GB of ram and the 3D effects works quite well. It doesn't really slow down the system. The only lag was the drive was taking it's time reading the live disc. |

Ubuntu is really good. For me it has always been extremely fast, and you can chat with people on AIM and MSN in Ubuntu. In fact the Pigdin Instant Messenger handles all of them, so you have all your contacts in the same window. But just a suggestion, I totally hate Macs, but that stops when it comes to music and art. So why the hell are you using Vista for music?! Go buy a Mac and download Pro tools. _________________

You can easily tweak Vista to run on low-end graphics, and by the time you disable any unnecessary services it's faster than XP, at least on my hardware.
Anyway, why a legal OS? There's no benefit if you have a good XP corporate key. |

So if cops come banging on your door (most likely not though) you can say, "I got a legal version *shoves CD in their face*! Now GTFO!". _________________

Outside of having the worlds worst graphic card, having Aero enabled is usually a good idea, since all the window management is done on the GPU instead of the CPU. |
