I got Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy running as a VM in Microsoft's VPC program, and I followed the tutorial for setting up Compiz Fusion here but none of the hotkeys work, and I can't figure out why.

ahh you have a lot to learn about Linux...

A good amount of commands are run through the terminal... ill brake this one down for you

TO OPEN THE TERMINAL:
Applications -> Something -> Terminal

I forget what that something is called, and its different on mine...

Code:
sudo

Your basically stating you are the super user of this computer.

Code:
apt-get

This is what they use to install/remove/find things/programs.

Code:
install

You are stating you want to install something (instead of remove).

Code:
gnome-compiz-manager

You are installing this package through apt-get while being the sudo root user...

To run this command, open the terminal and type/paste it in!

Then you probably have to enter your password (or maybe not in VMware).

Then hit Y/N (only sometimes you have to do this).

Then it will install. When it is done, type gnome-compiz-manager in the terminal.

How does this package differ from compizconfig-settings-manager?

You mean CCSM (compizconfig-settings-manager). I got that working fine (installed, allows me to change settings), but I can't get the hotkeys to work so that I can use the effects.

System>Preferences>Advanced Desktop Settings.

Effects>Paint Fire on Screen (It's enabled)>Paint Fire on Screen settings

See, it should work when I do Super(the windows button)+Shift+Left mouse button
