is there a tut somewhere for this?

Don't use PC's for Servers =P. If your getting an Ubuntu server that will be just fine. Ever wonder why games never use PC servers and only Linux xD.

Why does no one get that "PC" means "Personal Computer"? Weather you're ready to accept that or not, that's what it means, no matter what those stupid Mac commercials tell you to think.

Anyway, I'm going for XP, solely for compatibility reasons.

My fresh install of 8.04 uses high 600's right after boot. Search it and you'll find that other people have similar behavior.

My ArchLinux install sits at 90-100 and that's close to as minimalistic as you can get.

Notice that I did a "like 10 mb of your ram". I know though that it does NOT TAKE 600MB, bullshit. Well if you have 50 viruses and 32523 spywares running in the background, not even windows takes that much.
Who's retarded?

yep, there both good at differnt things. Shocked

Windows is not good, it's not windows that is good at "gameplaying". It's the game-developers who makes the games compatible with Windows, and not Linux. If the games were adapted to linux the performance would increase very much!
The problem is though, that at least over 70% uses windows.

(No, I'm not using linux. I'm a windows user.)

Linux is fairly aggressive at caching things into RAM.

600 would be an understandable amount upon boot.

By the way, slovach will own your ass.

Just want to say, there are so few viruses in/on Linux systems its not even funny... A hacker/virus maker would be stupid to make one for Linux when most gullable people use XP/Vista/Windows...

"like 10mb of your ram" is a far cry from 600mb. Rolling Eyes This is off a fresh install of 8.04 beta, with only video drivers and compiz installed. If you actually bothered to look it up like I said, you'd find that other people have noticed the same behavior. Hell, maybe if you had actually used it before, you wouldn't look like an idiot right now.

Performance would barely change in games going from windows to linux. Go run Quake 3 in windows, then linux, guess what... it's probably going to be same.

hmm suggestion, trying getting a distro thats not like Ubuntu...

Ubuntu is kindy stuff, sort of like the closing things to windows as you can get with ubuntu

Try debian (a step up from Ubuntu) or Gentoo (my love)

Alas, these dont have as easier installs as Ubuntu.

That's right off boot.

Open a few folders, maybe a picture and it ends up going right over 600 happily. Opened firefox and it cracked high 600's.

Once it neared 700 it had a major drop to the 400's though, so I'd figure it's trying to cache shit and free as needed like said before, but reading the Ubuntu forums seems to instill some alarm to this matter, as this wasn't normal behavior in past versions. Take it as you will, I'm sure the 9000 things ubuntu comes with by default doesn't help the matter however.

FUCK! I can't believe I said PC. That's like my major pet peeve and I actually said it xD. Yeah, I hate when people say it because a Mac and Windows are both PCs so it's REALLY FUCKING ANNOYING. Anyway I meant windows.

Try it..its fun to laugh in their faces hehehe (Microsoft's)

A server is a 'computer' just most times with a crap load more memory and better CPU's fit for the task.
But a 'normal' PC, such as your own can be used for any sort of server task, just limited to your knowledge and the software available to you.
Performance will depend upon how many connections you are taking, how intensive the task is and so on...

You do realize it's a beta? A beta HAVE bugs with it, install 7.0 and check the memory again.
