So I found out today that Intel plans on releasing a hex core by the end of the year...9megs of L2 cache and 16megs of L3 Shocked

So now we'll have 2 more cores for software to not utilize Confused

To be honest, I was expecting an 8-core processor to be the next gen CPU style...

But still Quad-Core should be enough, I mean seriously, its starting to get ridiculous.

This may actually end up being useful by the time it's released though if you think about it. A lot of games and programs will currently utilize 2 cores, so if you have a quad then you have 2 extra cores for background processes as well as if you wanna burn a dvd or something in the background. A few games now support 4 cores, so hopefully by the end of the year a lot more will, and we'll still have 2 extra cores for multi-tasking.

For a long time I've been hearing about 8-core chips, the 6-core kinda came out of nowhere.

Somebody reads Gizmodo Wink

But yes, future gaming will utilize a computer better than current games do now. Some people have beast computers but the games do not really use what is at there disposal.

Microsoft's biggest project right now is touch-screen and voice activated computers. Within 5 years, people wont be using keyboards anymore.

Yes..and the people with speech problems are fucked. I'll always use a keyboard. The fuck you gonna do when you're sneaking on at night?! Or in school? I doubt teachers would want you yelling commands at your PC.

Well, that sort of came out of nowhere. I was expecting an octo-core to be the next processor released.

Question is - how fast are each of the cores?
With dual cores (~2.8ghz), we see slightly less performance per processor than single cores(~3.0ghz), continuing on to quad cores we see even less performance(~2.4ghz) per processor. I suspect, when they're released, each core will probably be, unless we can find better ways of cooling, about 2.0ghz each, meaning until we have hexi-threaded programs, hexi-core will be even slower than quad.

As for schools, they would probably keep the keyboard, and lose the mouse.

As for sneaking on at night, you would probably have the option of a keyboard or voice-activated keyboard.

I like the good ol mouse and keyboard, it's efficient and easy, I see no reason to fix what isn't broken.

Trust me. When they make a "GOOD" touch screen and voice activated keyboard, than you will start hating the keyboard and mouse.
