Yes it's a bad idea, I think it's pretty self-explanatory why.

well once you got all your main drivers and programs installed you can make and name a restore a point, then turn off system restore, this will still leave you a good setup restore point without building up masses of automatic restore points,
when you update anything like drivers directX ect you can always turn the service back on and create a new restore point anytime,
the volume shadow copy service that is used by system restore is one of the places looked at for instance if the men in blue turn up on your doorstep cos you been watching youtube, so apart from being a harddrive hog it can be a privacy issue,
its a really useful recovery service, its even better if you know how to manage it,
if you got plenty of harddrive space and you dont need to worry about privacy then you can just use the disk cleanup to get rid of excess restore points,
one of the reasons it sometimes has to be turned off is when you get maleware viruses/trogans on your pc they can also be backed up by system restore so represent a reinfection risk,
your anti-virus usually cant get rid of these as the files are protected and you would need admin privilages to allow access to System Volume Information to destroy any bad stuff in there,
so you can get rid of it as long as you switch it back on for updates,
but you can keep it on as long as you occasionly use disk cleanup with admin privalages as well as for admin priv's for antivirus cleanups and as long as you dont have to worry about privacy too much......

I personally disable System Restore as one of the first things I do when I log into a newly installed system. I hate the feature and it does nothing but take up space that I will eventually need sooner or later. If you are the kind of person that downloads and opens everything, then yes, leave it on. You will probably need to use it the first day you have the computer.
If you take precautions and use suggested tools, you can turn it off an not worry about having to restore your system due to some crap virus. Mind you, just because it's a "snapshot" of a date before, that doesn't mean the infected files will be completely removed when you restore to an earlier date.
My opinion:
- Turn it off, it's a waste of space / memory.
- Get a virus scanner and keep it up to date. Scan regularly.
- Don't download everything you see on the net. Just because it says "ZOMG-FREE" doesn't mean it is what it says it is.
- Don't be dumb on the net.

So if you disable System restore which deletes a big .sys file, How much space do you save?

system restore is one of the best things on the bloody computer. i've used it so many times for various reasons. it saves you so much time if something clashes on your computer or you get a virus, all you do is tell it to restore to a certain date when the computer worked fine and in 5 minutes or so your computer should be back to normal, compared to a couple of hours working out the problem.
if you want to disable system restore then don't go crying back to us when you experiment with something and for example some of your drivers don't work, or you have a virus on your computer.
you're not going to sav much space by disabling system restore, unless your hard drive is that small and your having trouble with space on your computer.

Its useful, don't disable it.. if its a space issue just disable, then re-enable it right after that.. that flushes all the old restore points.

yeah delete the old restore data if you have issues regarding space on your computer, because you'll regret disabling system restore altogether.

If you don't have enough space, get a bigger hard drive, problem solved. Deleting System Restore is a bad idea, even for someone as experienced with PC's as me, I still end up using it on occasion. Windows is a glitchy OS and even if you don't do anything stupid things can still get messed up.
