This is what my aunt was telling me:

She starts up XP, it gets to the Windows screen with the load bar.

It does that for awhile then freezes, then restarts.

Would this have something to do with the 'Restart on Critical Error'?

Thanks for any help.

dunno mate the usual thing is to see if it will start in safe mode,

boot up pressing the F8 key and choose safe mode

that will start it with minimum drivers running so you will be in vga mode ect

so then you can turn off all your startup stuff in msconfig, the non microsoft stuff that is,

turn off all the non microsoft stuff including security apps like antivirus and firewall then restart and see if you manage to get back to your desktop in normal mode,

then turn things on one at a time reboot and see which one freezes windows in normal mode,

thats if safe mode gets you there in the first place lol.

anyway give that a try

				Also try to open it...

takeing the side off and clean it internally, vaccumeclean it (if thats what its called when you take a vacciume cleaner and use it) , get rid of dust and dead animals.

Thats may be the problem too.

No harm giveing it a shot, it can "almost" only get better.

Ugh. I had this problem with a Win98 computer.

Ended up installing a 2nd OS on another HD, and put in the old fucked up one as a slave and copied all my useful data, then a format on the original + install OS again. A lot of work, but I never figured out what exactly was wrong with it.

She's going to try the safe mode, then just reformat.
