Could just be the sound up too high that you are getting the 'static' of the system still playing the sounds / music, but while muted. In some stereo systems you can still hear the music feintly even when its muted if its turned up real loud.

Does turning the volume down help any?

Does the noise still persist while playing music / games / etc.? Basically does it stop when you are using the sound at all?
