1. Does it get it from the stack, heap or a page from the operating system?
2. What is the minimum memory it allocates? ex. if I ask for 1 byte does it allocate 32?

doing multiple allocs in one script will group it into the same page, so do watch your alloc size. (an alloc of 1 byte will cause the next alloc to be 1 byte after it. so alignment is something you may want to keep in mind as well)
