Hello everyone,
I am somewhat of a noob when it comes to computer hacking. But I am a intermediate computer user. Meaning I can turn on the computer while reading the instructions and having a second person check each step without electrocuting myself.
Here is my problem. I used to play Dune 2000 when it was first released. Now I have a laptop with windows 8.1 installed. I downloaded the cheat engine (from this site I believe) and ran through the tutorials (up to step 4 I think) to learn how to do what I needed to do to get unlimited spice. When I click the saved game file and try to open it in Cheat Engine...it tells me that it does not recognize the file extension.
Now for the stupid question that will probably get me banned from this site>
A) Is it safe to change the file extension from SV02.SOV to SV02.ct?
change the information I need to then change the extension back to SV02.SOV
The saved game file is a binary type file (so windows explorer file types says it is.
or
B) Install an update from somewhere that already has the needed file extension.

Perhaps it's better to explain what you wish to do first.
What is an SOV file and why do you think it's a good idea to rename it to .ct?

Well I was trying to use the cheat of changing the starting money in the game to the max amount. I carefully followed the examples and watched a couple of videos on you-tube. the SOV (or maybe it is named "SV" for the extension file) is the binary saved game file for Dune 2000. But cheat engine does not recognize the file when I try to open it. I did download the trainer for dune 2000. I clicked all the appropriate boxes I wanted. But when I loaded the game. Nothing.

make a backup of the file fkrst
now in cheat engine go to the processlist and click on open file
select that file and then go to the memory view window.
there you can change the file's content (go to address 0 if it's all question marks)

Thank you very much. That was real helpful. It allowed me to do what I wanted.
It was a bit frustrating at first. But them I never was a programming nerd. I did some basic stuff with basic, c, c+, and pascal (on an Apple IIE no less). So I have not kept up with the latest in programming stuff.
Now if I can just find the build time hack for the player, that would be awesome.
